The Q&A Archives: Seedlings that Wilt

Question: I recently began to grow flowers in containers on my balcony. I tried some from seed, some from transfer and some from bulb. Almost all died. The seedlings grew and then fell over, the bulbs turned into mush, and the transfers wilted and died. I watered them everyday, unless the soil seemed rather wet. Am I overwatering? underwatering? not enough drainage? Help! Ema Jane Betts Belmont, CA

Answer: You're right. You're probably over watering your plants and bulbs. Make sure you start with a soilless mix and a container that drains well. Only water when you stick your finger in the pot and the soil's dry down to the first knuckle, then water. Make sure they have enough sun and are out of the wind.
