The first thing to do is to run some basic soil tests and then add amendments as indicated by the results. In addition, most soils benefit greatly from the addition of organic matter (such as compost, chopped leaves, aged stable manure and bedding, etc.) and fall is a good time to do that. Some gardeners will also grow a bit of green manure such as annual rye to be turned under next spring, others will simply mulch the garden to protect it from erosion during the winter.
