Question: I grew these wonderful large tomatoes they appear to be very healthy and the plants a huge, however as they are starting to ripen the entire bottom of them turns brown and rots. why is this happening and what is it

PS. intermixed in the yellow tomatoes are red ones that do not have this same problem, we have been eating them for about a month now.

Answer: The symptoms sound suspiciously like blossom end rot. Blossom end rot can affect fruit at all stages of development. The characteristic symptom is a progressive deterioration of the blossom end of the fruit, from a water-soaked appearance to a sunken, black, leathery lesion. While secondary fungal infections may occur, blossom end rot is a physiological disorder caused by calcium deficiency induced by water stress.
