The Q&A Archives: Germinating Butterbeans

Question: I know when dealing with flower seeds that have hard shells you should nick them and soak them overnight. Do I follow the same procedure before I plant butter beans? Vicky Lowrey Norfolk, VA

Answer: You can soak the butterbeans overnight to pregermiante them, but you don't have to nick them. They'll absorb the water fine. Plant butterbeans once the soil has warmed to at least 60F.
