| Could you suggest a vine(s)to cover chain link fencing around the edge of a pond? The fencing helps to contain my flock of swans and other waterfowl. The plants need to be non-poisonous!!! I would like the vine to add winter interest, if possible. |
| Here are several suggestions for vines to help camouflage the fence in winter: Hedera helix (English ivy) can be trained along the fence and is evergreen. Fall blooming clematis will cover a fence and is so dense that it will help hide it in the winter even though it is deciduous. The native honeysuckles such as Lonicera sempervirens are semi-evergreen and will also do a good job of climbing and hiding it. Virginia creeper is another fast growing fence cover possibility with lovely fall color but of little help in winter. These plants are widely planted and the latter three are well distributed in the wild so I would not expect them to be harmful but I would suggest you check with your veterinarian as to the specific safety of these plants for waterfowl. |
