My Wife and I recently moved into a house that is surrounded by overgrown shrubs. I was wondering when and how much of the shrub I should cut without damaging the shrub?

The answer to your question really depends on what kinds of shrubs they are because the timing and amount you can take off vary as will the technique for cutting it back. You might want to look at a book or two about basic pruning for ornamental plants such as one in the Ortho Series, or take a look at the information at the following website http://www.ianr.unl.edu/pubs/H... which provides good instructions and diagrams. Good lcuk with your project!
