The Q&A Archives: Light Requirements for the Garden
Question: How many hours of sunshine does a basic garden need? I plan to plant corn, pole beans, tomatos, pumpkins, canteloupe, watermelon. My garden is going to be 35'x80'. The area that I plan to use should see morning sun through approximately 4:00pm. Is this ennough for the items I plan to grow? Ryan Baker Bainbridge, OH
Answer: Most vegetables need at least 6 hours of direct sun to grow and fruit properly. Your garden sounds fine! Some vegetables such as spinach and swiss chard can even grow in less light, so plant away!!
