| What is the recommended pruning method and timing for caryopteris? I have one planted in a mixed bed where its immediate neighbors are perennials. Should it be cut back yearly or just trimmed to keep its shape? |
| Caryopteris is usually pruned in the spring. First remove any winter kill and then prune for shape, finally give it an all over trim to encourage blooming. (This plant blooms on new wood.) In a year with a long growing season you may find you can encourage a longer blooming period by tip pruning to "deadhead" in late summer and encourage another flush of blooms. In a spring/summer season following a severe winter however you may find it has been killed to the ground and pruning is not an issue. |
