The Q&A Archives: Harvesting Prickly Pear Cactus Fruit

Question: How can I tell when prickly pear cactus fruit is fully ripe to harvest?

Answer: Its color will be an overall rich, deep red and the fruit will come off easily from the plant. It will be firm, but not overly soft. Use long-handled tongs to grasp it to avoid spines. If the fruit is extremely soft, or wrinkled, it's probably over-ripe. Good luck!
