How can I tell when prickly pear cactus fruit is fully ripe to harvest?

Its color will be an overall rich, deep red and the fruit will come off easily from the plant. It will be firm, but not overly soft. Use long-handled tongs to grasp it to avoid spines. If the fruit is extremely soft, or wrinkled, it's probably over-ripe. Good luck!
