I need a perennial for both sides of my front stairs that grows a maximum of 3' high, in full sun, and that flowers in the late summer and fall. Can you recommend something?

I think the first choice is chrysanthemum, followed closely by any of the asters. A. amellus, the Italian aster, is a sturdy plant with violet, yellow-centered flowers. A. yunnanensis, the Chinese aster, blooms in lavender-blue with an orange-centered flower. Callistephus, Chinese daisies, have many flower forms, from quilled, curled, ribbonlike or interlaced, and come in many pastel colors. One of them should be just right for next to your entryway.
