The Q&A Archives: Pruning Blue Spruce Pines

Question: When should you prune blue spruce pine trees? I also have little brown tips on the ends of branches on a couple of blue spruces. I have 11 of these trees and they are about 30 years old. Marylloyd Claytor Pittsburgh, PA

Answer: Early summer would be the time to prune your blue spruce trees, but you may want to take a sample of the brown tips to your local nurseryman or Cooperative Extension Service office because there are a number of insects such as spruce budworm that can cause that type of damage on spruces. When pruning, only prune out dead limbs and shear the tips for the "Christmas tree" look.
