When is the best time of year to plant a burning bush in my area of New York? I am particularly concerned because a bad winter is predicted this year. |
Burning bushes are very hardy plants. Bare root plants are only available in the spring so that's when they are planted. Early fall and early spring are the best times to plant container grown plants, although they can be planted at any time the ground is not frozen. Water the plant well before planting and then water it in very well at planting. Add several inches of organic mulch such as shredded bark to cover the short term expected root zone (but do not place it against the stem/trunk) and then keep an eye on the soil moisture for at least a full year. Your aim is to keep the soil moist but not soggy or sopping wet. |
