| Small gardens call for shrubs that remain small, or at least are slow-growing enough to remain small for a long period of time. Sandy soils drain quickly, so we'll categorize the site as sunny and dry. Your choices for this garden spot include Cistus (Rock Rose), Malva, Berberis, Juniper, Lavender, plus these perennial flowers: Iberis, Dianthus, Armeria, Sedum, Gaillardia, Portulaca and Erysimum. To help your new plants thrive, mix in generous amounts of aged compost or other organic matter prior to planting. The addition of organic matter will help the soil retain moisture and will provide some nutrients to the roots of the plants. |
