Answer: There is very little you can do to repair a lost strip of bark. The best thing you can do is to help the tree stay healthy so it can try to heal itself. This would mean watering it in times of drought and possibly fertilizing it with a balanced fertilizer in late fall after the leaves have come down. I can't think off hand of a typical reason for this to happen to an ash.
