I've read that garden huckleberries are toxic and need to be boiled before eaten. If I'm making jam or a pie does the heat from that count?

Garden huckleberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) are not toxic, although they are related to plants that are. Garden huckleberries can be bitter, and the bitter taste is removed by parboiling for 10 minutes in water that contains a pinch of baking soda. I assume if you are making jam or pie, you are boiling the fruits with sugars, etc., first, so that should remove the bitter taste. I hope this info helps!
