I just purchased Callicarpa shrub, violet berries. Don't know variety, but I need to know sun/shade, soil type, etc, to decide where to plant it.

They are eyecatching! In fact, that may be the most important aspect of placing this shrub. For the most part these are adaptable plants for sun to light shade and need a well drained location. Keep in mind too that it may winterkill to the ground (many gardeners cut them back very hard every spring in any case) and so can be treated for the most part like any other herbaceous perennial. Enjoy your new plant!
