Any type of aloe, including an aloe vera, is considered a succulent plant, but it is not a cactus. (Cactus are also considered to be succulents. But cactus and aloe are each a distinct genus.)

Like cactus, aloe vera like a well-draining soil. However, it is not a terribly fussy plant, so you can use any good potting soil, mixed with about 1/4 perlite or pumice to improve drainage. Or, if you can find potting soil specifically formulated for cactus, that would also be good. Thanks for writing!
