| This summer I noticed a couple of interesting "weeds" in my garden. They were clearly monocots and had beautiful foliage so I let them grow to see what they were. Lo and behold, the bronze one just bloomed and it seems to be a red canna! The other appears to be identical except has green foliage - it hasn't bloomed yet. Could this be? I have no cannas in my yard (and have never grown them). My neighbor across the street may have a small patch in front. Could the seeds have been carried by birds or the wind??? Thanks for your help! |
| Cannas can be started from seed, but they must first be chipped and soaked. I suspect that birds have done the planting for you and through the process of eating and eliminating the seeds, plus the grinding action of the earth during freeze and thaws, all the cultural conditions were met for the germination of these seedss. You have a real bonus with no effort at all on your part! Enjoy your new plants! |
