How do you grow irises successfully?

By iris I hope you mean the tall bearded type often seen in borders. These plants need full sun and a rich, well drained soil. The rhizomes should be planted nearly on top of the soil rather than buried -- the top half of the rhizome should be visible after planting. They should be kept weeded in the summer and any discolored foliage should be removed promptly to reduce disease and insect problems. A thorough fall clean up is also recommended.
