The Q&A Archives: Growing Cockscomb In Zone 5

Question: What is the species and genus name of "cockscomb" and what are the techniques needed to grow them in zone 5?

Answer: Cockscomb is an informal name for numerous types of Celosia. C. cristata makes one a bit reminiscent of a rooster (or a clump of coral) , while C. spicata makes a plumier shaped bloom. These are annuals which do well in hot, sunny locations with average soil and good drainage. The only "trick" to growing these is to wait until the soil is warm in the spring before planting, and then being patient because they can take anywhere from three to four months to bloom.
