The Q&A Archives: Growing Rhubarb

Question: Will rhubarb grow in shade and does it require a lot of water? Will it produce any fruit the next year? How many pumpkins does the average plant put out? Which Burpee pumpkin would make a good carving one for kids? Laura Fuller Ogden, UT

Answer: Rhubarb likes full or at least 4 hours of sun to produce best. It will produce stem and leaves in the shade, but it won't grow very vigorously. It likes moist, manure filled soil. A good pumpkin for carving is 'Tripple Treat'. It produces about 6-8 pumpkins per vine which are great for carving and eating the seeds. My kids love them!
