Willows are all Salix but there are a number of species within that group, among them a number of ornamental willows such as Salix babylonica (Babylon Weeping Willow) and Salix matsudana (Hankow Willow); Hankow WIllow includes many varieties grown for their special characteristics such as "Golden Curls" and "Tortuosa". In any case, willows can be cut back in the late winter to encourage new shoot growth in the coming spring. I would not trim one back in the late fall because it might encourage new growth that would not have time to harden off before the cold weather sets in.
