I planted mums two years ago and they get huge by late summer and start spreading apart and falling to the sides by beginning of fall. Is this because I need to cut them back more in June?

Possibly, but in many cases this flopping is simply a function of the variety you are growing and even repeated pinching in spring through early July will not stop it completely. In some cases division on an annual basis will help, but not always. You might want to try staking the plants or growing them up through peony hoops or try another variety.
