My Japanese rose looks shabby. How is the best way to trim it? When is the best time to trim it?

Rosa rugosa is sometimes called Japanese rose. If this sprawling, vigorous rose is what you're growing, you can trim it back in the spring, just before new growth begins. This type rose can be sheared into a hedge or just cut way back, within a few feet of the ground. It will reward your efforts by producing lots of new shoots and flowering stems throughout the growing season.
