The Q&A Archives: Mulberry Suckers Growing Like Crazy

Question: How do you keep the suckers from a cut down mulberry tree from shooting up?

Answer: Even though the top of the plant has been cut down, the roots have lots of stored energy and will continue to send out sprouts until that energy is sapped. Keep cutting the suckers down before they develop leaves and eventually the roots will stop producing suckers. Better control is to dig down and expose the point of origin, and remove each sucker without leaving a stub.
