I have a butternut tree that produces a lot of nuts every year. The squirrels love them, but are they edible for people?

According to Michael Dirr's "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants", the seeds of Butternut (Juglans cinerea) are "sweet, edible and very oily." I suppose that's where the "butter" part of the name came from!
