| I planted daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths at the suggested depths. Something (a skunk? a raccoon?) dug them all up. Some were missing, but not all. How can I stop this animal from digging up the bulbs? |
| Here are several suggestions. Some work in some gardens but not in others, so you may have to try a few before you acheive success. One is dipping the bulbs in an animal repellent such as Ro-pel just prior to planting. Another is to be sure to bury the bulbs at the deepest suggested depth and then water the area well, top with mulch and thorny clippings such as from a rosebush. Yet another is to enclose the bulbs in a wire mesh cage or to cover the planting area with wire mesh or even old metal window screens. In my experience the culprits are usually squirrels and/or chipmunks. For some reason they love to eat tulips and crocus, but leave the daffodils alone for the most part. |
