Figs will tolerate some shade but they produce more fruit when they recieve full sunshine. If you have a choice, position your tree so it receives direct sunshine all afternoon (morning shade is okay). To produce fruit your fig tree will need regular water during the spring and summer months if the weather is dry. Otherwise, there's no need to water, and withholding water in late summer and early fall is a good way to help the tree harden off in preparation for winter weather. If you can't water during spring and summer the tree will survive, it just won't produce a bumper crop for you.
