Last year I collected English walnut nuts from a tree on a golf course. How do I go about germinating these seeds? Do they require any pre-germination treatment? How deep should I plant the nuts? |
English walnuts grown for their nuts are usually grafted onto black walnut rootstock for disease resistance. Seedlings may require up to 20 years to bear. Ornamental walnuts are usually grown from seed. Gather ripe fruits, take off the green husks and sow immediately. Or, stratify for 120-190 days at 41 degrees F. Sow 1 inch deep. Seeds germinate at 50 degrees F. Good luck! |
