The Q&A Archives: Information on Holly Trees

Question: Does a holly tree take any special type of soil, if so what and what care do they take. Also, do you have to get a male and female tree? EF HAY Mayville, KY

Answer: Chinese Holly is very adaptable, withstands drought and is pH adaptable; Japanese Holly prefers light, moist, well-drained , slightly acid soil....sun or shade adaptable; American Holly likes moist, loose, acid, well-drained soil....partial shade or full sun...avoid extremely dry, windy, unprotected places and does not tolerate poor drainage. Hollies are male and female so use 1 male plant for every 2-3 females to insure good berry production.
