After a late start I have 15" ferns approaching frost. I never thinned from original tight seed sowing. Should I thin the plants when preparing the bed for winter?

In the long run the plants will grow better if they are properly spaced so as to allow them room. (Mature asparagus plants are huge.) I think I would wait until next spring and then thin them. That way you could eat the thinnings -- or transplant them.
