The Q&A Archives: Protecting Tender Perennial Herbs

Question: I intend to grow a combination of hardy and tender perennial herbs this year. I understand the tender herbs will need protection during the winter. Could you advise me on what that protection should be? Deborah Southard Stafford, VA

Answer: A thick layer (4-6") of mulch after the first hard freeze in fall should do the trick! It can be hay, straw, chopped up leaves, or evergreen boughs! Keep it on until spring when the new growth starts.
