The Q&A Archives: Science Fair Experiment/tomato Plants

Question: Will tomato plants grow better in soil, sand or water? Please give me your expert opinion on the differences between each.

Answer: There are many variables to be considered beyond that of soil or growing medium and I would not presume to design your experiment or do your research for you. At first glance, tomatoes should grow best in soil. However, if that soil is poorly suited to tomatoes, they may not grow there at all. And tomatoes are successfully grown in water (hydroponically) and can certainly be grown in sand if watered and fed sufficiently. Good luck with your experiment!
