Answer: Strawberry beds are best renewed every 3-4 years. (I find the older plants begin to peter-out after about 3 years.) You can renovate the bed now by digging all the plants and discarding the oldest ones. The newest plants can be kept and replanted. Strawberries like sandy soil (it provides excellent drainage). You can amend the bed with sandy topsoil plus 3"-4" of organic matter. After digging out all the weeds and grass, and amending the soil, replant the smallest crowns, then mulch over the bare soil with straw to suppress weed growth.
