| I have a raised box that is 3' by 30' full of four varieties of strwberries. There is quite a bit of grass growing in them. I would like to transplant them into another box and eliminate the grass. How do I best do this and save the plants? Can I do it now or should I wait till spring? How can I best build a soil medium for them to grow best in? |
| Strawberry beds are best renewed every 3-4 years. (I find the older plants begin to peter-out after about 3 years.) You can renovate the bed now by digging all the plants and discarding the oldest ones. The newest plants can be kept and replanted. Strawberries like sandy soil (it provides excellent drainage). You can amend the bed with sandy topsoil plus 3"-4" of organic matter. After digging out all the weeds and grass, and amending the soil, replant the smallest crowns, then mulch over the bare soil with straw to suppress weed growth. Enjoy! |
