I just got a flowering crabapple tree as a gift. I would like to know how to tell which variety it is.

The best way of all is to check the label if it has one. Unfortunately if the label is missing there is really no way to tell until it is in bloom and you can see the foliage as well as the flowers -- and even then it can be a tough call as there are hundreds and hundreds of crabapples in popular commerce! The best way might be to find out where it was purchased, ask them which varieties they stocked (and their characteristics), and then work by process of elimination next spring. It's sure to be pretty, no matter which one it is!
