| I harvested Jack-in-the-Pulpit seeds from my woods early this fall and I am wondering when and how to plant them, ie: in the fall, spring, or? And do they need to be dried before planting? |
| This information is from the American Horticultural Society's book, Plant Propagation. It says to remove the berries from the plant as soon as they are red and ripe, and to squash them to release the seeds. The flesh of the berries may inhibit germination, so wash the seeds and dry them for 24 hours in a warm place. Sow immediately in trays with a soil-based seed soil mix and fine grit or coarse sand. Moisten the mix then spread the seeds over it. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of mix. Germination can be slow and erratic and they recommend keeping all sown seeds for up to 4 years before discarding them. Good luck! |
