I recently moved to Chico, CA and would like to know if Elderberry and Hazelnut trees/bushes will thrive in the area. Thank you in advance.

Sambucus canadensis, the American Elderberry, should thrive in your garden, as should S. callicarpa, the Coast Red Elderberry. You'll need two varieties for fruit - 'Adams' and 'John' are two named fruiting varieties, but there are many more to chose from.

Probably the best hazelnut choice for you is Corylus cornuta californica, the Western Hazelnut. It's native to the damp slopes of the northern coast ranges of California. It is more of a shrub than a tree, with open, spreading habit to 12' high. The nuts are small but flavorful.
