When is the best time of the year to prune back to the ground a star jasmine vine? The plant is severely overgrown and we would like to prune it and train it up a trellis.

It's usually best to prune in the spring, when the plant is prepared to send out vigorous new shoots. Pruning usually prompts a plant to grow. In your mild winter climate plants will continue to grow during the winter months, but you can expect a faster response to pruning if you wait until early spring.
