The Q&A Archives: Black Squirrels

Question: Since I live in the Northeast, our most common squirrels are gray or reddish/gray. We have two totally BLACK squirrels that live in the woods behind my house since Sept. How rare is a black squirrel ? (maybe in other parts of the country they are common, but here in the Northeast ?

Answer: While black squirrels are seen less often than the others, they are not rare per se. For a more accurate picture of your localized black squirrel population rate you might contact a naturalist at a local or regional park.
