The Q&A Archives: Controlling Aphids on Seedlings

Question: I am starting seeds in my basement. I discovered aphids on some of the seedlings. Can they be down there from the previous year? Marian Fragodt Browerville, MN

Answer: If you didn't clean out the pots or are using old potting soil, there is a chance the aphids are hanging around from those things. Always start in the winter with fresh potting soil, clean the pots and benches with a bleach solution and keep any otherplants (houseplants...) away from the seed starting area. You can kill the aphids with a spray of insecticidal soap.
