My in-laws from Germany insist that one should not add citrus fruits to a compost pile (although they were unable to provide an explanation). In all of the information I have read on composting, I have never found anything on the subject. Do you think that the reasoning is that one should avoid too much acidity in the compost? Is there anything to their warning?

Many home gardeners routinely add citrus rinds from the kitchen to their compost pile. In a large quantity (I'm thinking of at least cubic yards at a time) it might create an imbalance of one kind or another and lead to fermentation for example, but a few rinds at a time should be fine.
