Will my perennial sweetpeas die back? Should I cut them back during the winter?

In my garden the perennial sweet peas stay evergreen but begin to look a bit battered by spring. Since they also sometimes scamble beyond their allotted space I trim them back as needed in mid winter (and occasionally in the summer if needed). I think it helps them stay a bit denser, too.
