Before you get too involved in the seed saving process, you should know that squash and pumpkins cross pollinate in the field. The seed they produce may not grow up to be a real pumpkin, but may be a cross between several varieties. If you're willing to take a chance on your "mystery" seed, the best way to store it, once it's dry, is in an airtight container (jar with a tight fitting lid, or a film or prescription bottle). Keep it cool and dark - but don't put it in a refrigerator. In the spring, when the soil is warm, plant your seeds and see what happens!
