How do I prune my 4 ft.gardenia? I have been pruning it off and on for several years and the branches are sticking out every which way.

Gardenias should be pruned after they bloom. At that time you can cut them back as far as you desire. I have cut mine back to within a foot of the ground and they came back. After getting them to the size you want, prune them after they bloom each year and you can keep them at that size.
