Recently we picked up some acorns and brought them home from Michigan. How do we start an acorn in planting an oak tree? Does it need to be scarred or just planted? When is the best time to do this? Thank you for your help. |
Quercus, or Oak, can be grown from an acorn with the following treatment: Store in the refrigerator for 30 - 45 days in moist sand or sand and peat. This process is called stratification and allows the seed to go through dormancy before it germinates. During this treatment the acorn should swell and the outer seed coat should split. Once the seed has germinated it can be planted outdoors. Try to time this treatment so you can plant it outside in the spring, after the soil warms up. |
