My father has gathered several live oak acorns and wants to know if he should soak the nut before planting. Which direction should the nut be facing, pointed side up or down, can he begin them in-doors in pots and when to transplant. |
Acorns need a soak, then a pre-chill treatment prior to germination. First soak for 24 hours, then mix with moistened potting soil and seal in a plastic bag. Refrigerate for 3 months, then plant, pointed end down, on the surface of moistened potting soil (seeds need light to germinate). Press them in with your hand, but don't cover with additional soil. Seeds will germinate in 120-365 days. |
