Walnut trees usually only need pruning to remove dead wood or correct the shape. Young trees should be trained to make a central leading shoot and begin branching high enough to allow foot traffic under the branches. Wait until late winter or early spring (February or March) to prune. (Pruning encourages new growth. If you prune now, any new buds or shoots will be susceptible to cold weather damage.)
