Butterfly bush has a tendency to be kind of "rangey." Pruning is best done in the late winter/very early spring before new growth appears. In general when pruning an overgrown shrub, you can cut some of the main stems down at the base to let light in, and cut out some of the twiggy tip growth to increase bushiness. It's best not to prune more than 1/3 of a plant a year, so you don't stress the plant. Continue pinching some of the new growth back periodically.
