| I was drooling last summer over some of Burpee's coleus pots, but I understand coleus originates from warm ocean islands. Would it be happy outside in shade during summer in Alaska? (Night temps 40 to 50 F, day temps 50 to 60, ground temp 40 to 50)? |
| Coleus are really attractive shade plants, especially if you keep them pinched back regularly so they remain bushy. The plants really grow best where summers are warmer than your gardening region can provide, though. In such cool temperatures they may refuse to grow. But, I think they're worth a try! They grow wonderfully well in my Seattle area garden (and our summers aren't noted for being the warmest!) Try a few plants and see how they do for you. If they don't work in your garden beds, grow them as houseplants instead! |
