| After a week of odd weather (Monday it was 28 degrees F, Saturday in the 60's) my bulbs, which are planted in a raised box have begun to sprout. What should I do? I know once the temperature drops again they'll die off, but will they bloom in the spring/summer? |
| The best thing is to hope the weather settles and stays cold. However, there's not much we can do about that! Some bulbs will normally sprout in the fall (grape hyacinths do this) and others maydo so a bit if conditions are mild. This is not a problem although the foliage may become a bit battered during the winter months. You might try mulching them to try to even out the soil temperature and/or perhaps setting the box in a cooler shadier location. You will also need to make sure the soil temperature in the box does not drop too low and consequently freeze the bulbs to death. Depending on the size of the box you may need to try to insulate it against extreme cold as well as against warmth. |
